Exams have begun, and matriculants are writing their final exams, with the majority of them staying indoors to study and sleep as much as possible. They want their minds to be clear when they sit down to write, and they need to remember everything they studied by heart in order to pass. Unfortunately, two matriculants died, and it is heartbreaking that they will not see the new year and will not complete their matriculation.
After taking an Isizulu exam, the first student was murdered, and the second committed suicide. But why do I hold the Department of Education responsible for all of this?
When you go to the clinic for a blood test, they tell you that if you test positive, you must go to counseling, which will be provided immediately, but if you test negative, you can go home. The same thing should happen at school; you can motivate students all you want, but at the end of the day, we are not equal; we do not have the same thinking abilities, and some will fail while others will pass; it's a part of life. Why not provide counseling to all students in advance so that they know that even if they fail, they will have a second chance to make things right? Why not give them pamphlets to take home to remind them that failure is not the end of the world? What does the department do to learn about and try to solve the problems that students face at school?
There is a social worker at school, and they must speak with them. How will I open up to them if I know the social worker and the social worker is friends with my neighbor? Why don't they hire someone from a different province?
The second student was stabbed to death by a grade 10 student; where was the school's security? Where had the teachers gone? How did the other students get a knife into the school? What does the department do to prevent school violence?
Suspension? There are over 100 schools in South Africa, so a learner can still attend another. Why not simply ban them permanently? Why not forbid the perpetrator from attending any other school in the country? Why not make getting a matric certificate impossible for them? The department must take the fight against school violence seriously.
Many problems occur at school that the department is slow or unable to resolve. Leaking exam papers, teachers dating students, violence, vandalism, and other incidents continue to expose their incompetence.
